SENIOR LEGAL OFFICER

Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons to fill the position of SENIOR LEGAL OFFICER, on contract, in the Personnel Department. Terms and conditions of employment will be negotiated with the Chief Personnel Officer.

KEY FUNCTIONS

  • Provides legal advice to the Personnel Department on the application and interpretation of legislation, policies and practices relating to human resource management in the Public Service.
  • Represents the Personnel Department in matters before the Industrial Court and the Special Tribunal as well as Disciplinary Tribunals.
  • Prepares draft legislation, for example, regulations governing public officers, as well as Collective Agreements, Memoranda of Agreement, contracts etc.
  • Prepares opinions on points of law relevant to the work of the Personnel Department.
  • Supervises staff of the Legal Services Division.
  • Represents the Division at meetings and on committees.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

  • Training as evidenced by the possession of a Legal Education Certificate or its equivalent, from a recognized institution, and evidence of having been admitted to practice as an Attorney-at-Law in Trinidad and Tobago.
  • 5 years or more experience as an advocate.
  • Experience as a legal practitioner with considerable knowledge of the public service legal framework and industrial relations principles and practices would be an asset.
